Hey guys, I am back with another post and I thought of sharing my view on India.
India is the 7th Largest country by area and once upon a time vast area was under forests. Forests has acquired increasing importance in the recent past for their role not only in meeting the material requirements but also for their ecological and environmental functions. Some of the important parameters used for measuring forest resources are forest cover, growing stock, annual increment, species composition, biodiversity, non-timber forest products etc. In a country like India, whose forests are rich and diverse, collection and compilation of information on all these parameters is daunting task.
Since 1987, the forest cover of the country is being assessed biannually by the Forest Survey of India (FSI) using Remote Sensing Technology. In addition, FSI also prepares thematic maps using aerial photographs, and carries out inventory of natural forests as well as Tress Outside Forests (TOF). Thematic maps depict forest types, major species composition and crown density of forest. Inventory of natural forests furnishes information on total growing stock, volume per hectare, distribution of stems in diameter classes, stems per hectare, status of regeneration, incidence of forest fires, grazing etc. Inventory of TOF gives information on growing stock of different species broken into diameter classes. The activities, other than forest cover assessment, are undertaken only in limited areas annually.
Comprehensive information on most of the parameters of forest resources is not available as the national level and even if available for certain regions, it does not relate to a single reference year and hence is of little utility for planning in the forestry sector. Due to limitation of resources and infrastructure, only forest cover is being assessed regularly by the FSI.
